How To Conquer The Negative Thoughts That Are Holding You Back
Is your mind overrun with negative thoughts and worries that are holding you back?
They crowd your mind and stop you in your tracks every time you want to do something new, leaving you feeling lonely, frustrated and lost.
You may be stuck in a job you hate, but you’re too scared to move.
Maybe you're not entirely happy. But, you’re not even sure what you really want, so you do nothing.
You worry you’re going to look back one day and regret that you didn’t do things differently.
So how do you conquer your negative thoughts?
You strip them back to their root cause.
If you understand the real reason WHY you’re scared, you’re one step closer to overcoming the inertia that's keeping you stuck.
And do you know the single biggest reason why fear cripples us?
Your brain is hard-wired to resist change to protect you from the unknown. We were made this way millions of years ago when life was a whole lot more deadly and dangerous.
But now, millions of years later, our brains haven't caught up. So, when a situation feels uncertain, fear will override everything and create excuses to prevent you from getting hurt.
Your fears become thought patterns that keep you stuck in a rut. Even though you want to do something different – change jobs, make a relationship decision, move towns – you self-sabotage and keep busy doing all the wrong things.
One moment you feel excited about something new, the next you feel nauseous and afraid as the worries take over.
So what’s the answer? You need to learn how to understand your thoughts and why you believe you can’t handle the things you fear. Your brain needs retraining.
Here are a few simple steps you can follow to get started:
Think about the real reason you’re scared. What’s the real reason for your struggle? Ask yourself why you're not taking action.
Imagine there are no consequences and set a goal you’d love to achieve if your thoughts were unable to stop you. Write it down.
Change your story by separating yourself from your negative thoughts – remember, you are not your thoughts. Treat them as things and question the validity of each thought.
Identify the rewards that will make the change worth it to boost your motivation. Again, write them down.
Break down your goal into manageable steps and take action. Chunk them together into 3-5 groups with smaller steps within each group.
Now let me ask you this…
Imagine what would your life be like if fear didn’t stop you living a life you love.
